Since the morning of October 20th, we’ve had frosts down to -3°C for the second day in a row, with a 2 mm layer of ice forming on the water. After cleaning out the fireplace and getting a fire going, I used a magnet to remove any metal bits from the ashes, all the while admiring the frost. Inside the greenhouse, however, the temperature remains above freezing, and the tomatoes are ripening nicely. For years, the southwestern side was cluttered with containers of seaweed and leaves, along with various bits of metal left on the greenhouse floor. I’ve now cleared all of that away, leveled the soil, and covered it with cardboard—just as I did with the northwestern half. In this newly reclaimed space, I’ve planted the strawberry varieties I acquired this year—which have since propagated—as well as runners from a white-berried variety. Between the rows, I placed crates filled with fallen fruit and food scraps; to keep crows from making off with this "worm feed," I strung white fishing line between one-meter-tall stakes—a deterrent that these highly intelligent birds tend to steer clear of. In addition to the cardboard, I brought in several bags of leaves and emptied them into the greenhouse to provide winter insulation for the flowers. I also swept the pine needles off the shed roof and used a cordless saw to trim back some large branches that were getting in the way of harvesting apples and maintaining the roof.
