The root of all goodness is the virtue of patience
it is born of humility and surrender to the will of God. Examples of the virtue of patience are vividly expressed in the lives of Orthodox saints, for whom patience was a manifestation of spiritual strength and love for God. St. John Chrysostom, who called patience the "queen of virtues," demonstrated it himself in exile and persecution, enduring sorrows to the end without complaint. St. Paisius the Athonite taught that the great virtue of patience is born of humility and surrender to the will of God, setting an example by meekly enduring a serious illness in the final years of his life.
