Did Churchill's RAF Bomber Command war crime win the Battle of Britain Dr Robin Clifton
• Churchill goaded Goering and Hitler into bombing civilians to distract the Luftwaffe from attacking crucial airfields and radar stations during the crucial (to avoid invasion) Battle of Britain in August/September 1940 • Hitler's Reaction: Furious that Berlin had been hit, Adolf Hitler abandoned the Luftwaffe's successful strategy of targeting RAF fighter airfields and radar stations. Instead, he ordered a full-scale terror bombing campaign against British cities. • The Relief for the RAF: By shifting focus from airfields to civilian areas, the German Luftwaffe gave the exhausted RAF vital breathing room to repair their bases, train new pilots, and rest their fighters. • The Blitz: This fateful error triggered The Blitz—months of heavy German bombing on London and other industrial centers—while permanently altering the trajectory of the war against Nazi Germany. Great Blunders of WWII: The Pilot Who Bombed London I War There: The Blitz Timeline (1940): 24 Aug: Germans accidentally bomb London. Bomber crews responsible demoted to infantry battalions as punishment. Luftwaffe stays well away from London over the next few days and nights — a show of fair play. Rudolf Hess initiates secret contacts with high level British officials — so, Britain knew the bombing of London had been an accident! 25 Aug: RAF raids Berlin -- using incendiary bombs (on Churchill's personal orders). No casualties. Hitler eats it. 28 Aug: RAF raids Berlin. German casualties. Public outrage. Nazis fear civil unrest. Hitler eats it. 3 Sep: RAF raids Berlin. Further German casualties. Public outrage. Nazis fear civil unreast. Hitler prepares speech. 4 Sep: Bowing to public pressure, Hitler speeks at Berlin Sports Palace warning Britain to cease Terror Bombing or else Germany would retaliate. Churchill knew further bombing of Berlin would provoke retaliation. 6 Sep: RAF raids Berlin again with 81 bombers. The RAF has now bombed civilians in Berlin four (4) times. All the while, Rudolf Hess has been appologizing to the British government, and the Luftwaffe has been bending over backwards to avoid London airspace. Churchill's terrorism (violence against civilian non-combatants) is unambiguously unprovoked. 7 Sep: Luftwaffe raids London docks. That night, 240 Luftwaffe bombers attack London again. Over the next 2 months, London is bombed every night but one in what is now known as The Blitz. 15 Sep: Disastrous Luftwaffe raid on London where massive losses force the Germans to draw back from their strategy and concede RAF air superiority. Now known annually as 'Battle of Britain Day', but, by 2026, barely commemorated in the UK. Churchill wittingly initiated Terror Bombing and wittingly tried to provoke Hitler into a response. He did this to force Hitler — through public pressure — into diverting attacks away from critical military assets (air fields, sector and radar stations) to expendable civilian assets (London and other cities). Churchill's decision cost 43,000 Britons their lives, and 2.5 million Britons their homes. But Churchill's cunning also won the Battle of Britain. Churchill made a decision Stalin would have been proud of, but (from a certain stance) it's hard to argue with victory. https://feldgrau.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=25089
